Getting back to work often means getting back into routine — and that’s exactly when shortcuts can creep in. In Smart Start Monday – Episode 1, we go back to basics and focus on the critical MEWP pre-use checks that should happen before the machine ever moves.
These aren’t advanced inspections. They’re the simple, often-overlooked checks that prevent serious incidents when done properly — and cause them when skipped.
Why Pre-Use Inspections Matter
A pre-use inspection is your first safety barrier. It confirms that:
- The conditions are safe
- The machine is fit for use
- The safety systems will protect you if something goes wrong
Most MEWP incidents don’t happen because operators don’t know better — they happen because the basics weren’t checked that day.
Check the Ground Before You Lift
Before you even think about lifting, check the ground.
Ground conditions directly affect MEWP stability. Operators should always confirm that the surface is:
- Firm
- Level
- Able to support the MEWP
Take a moment to physically assess the surface. Soft soil, uneven ground, voids, or covers can all lead to instability and overturns. A quick ground check can prevent a serious incident later in the job.
Look Up for Overhead Hazards
Once the ground is confirmed, the next step is simple but critical: look up.
Overhead hazards are often missed because operators focus on what’s in front of them. Always identify:
- Power lines
- Roof edges
- Beams and structures
- Any obstruction that could cause crushing or contact
Getting too close to overhead hazards can result in electrocution, crushing, or entrapment. Spotting these risks before lifting gives you the chance to plan safe working distances.
Make Sure Safety Systems Work
Safety systems are there to stop an incident from becoming a serious injury.
As part of your pre-use inspection, confirm that:
- Emergency stop buttons are functional
- Safety controls respond correctly
- Nothing has been bypassed or disabled
Emergency stops should always be checked — if they don’t work, the MEWP should not be used. A machine without working safety systems is not ready for operation.
Inspect the Machine Itself
A visual walk-around inspection helps catch problems early.
Take time to look for:
- Visible damage
- Hydraulic leaks
- Loose or damaged components
- Tyres, base, and guardrails in good condition
After visual checks, perform a function test:
- Test movements smoothly
- Operate slowly
- Pay attention to anything that feels or sounds off
If something doesn’t feel right, stop and report it.
The Rule That Overrides Everything
The most important message from Episode 2 is simple:
If any one of these checks fails — stop. Don’t use the MEWP.
There’s no such thing as “just for a minute” or “it’ll be fine this time.” One failed check is enough to take the machine out of service until it’s made safe.
Back to Basics, Every Time
Pre-use inspections don’t need to be complicated. They need to be consistent.
By checking:
- The ground
- The space above you
- The safety systems
- The condition and function of the machine
you reduce risk before the job even starts.
Because a smart start really does keep you safe, every time.
