Episode 13 – MEWP Pre-Use Inspection: Inspect. Detect. Correct.

Why a Proper MEWP Inspection Matters Before Every Shift

Before any Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) is operated, one step must never be skipped — a documented pre-use inspection.

This isn’t a quick glance or a rushed check.
It’s a structured, methodical process designed to ensure the equipment is safe, compliant, and ready for operation.

In this guide, we break down the key principle:
Inspect. Detect. Correct.

1. Inspect – Start With the Fundamentals

A proper MEWP inspection begins before the machine is even switched on.

Check Your Documentation First

Before your walk-around inspection, confirm:

  • The MEWP has a valid load test / inspection certificate
  • The operator’s manual is present and accessible on the machine
  • Inspection records are up to date

No documentation = no operation

This step is critical for compliance and ensures the machine has been properly maintained and certified.

Walk-Around Inspection (Visual Checks)

Once documentation is confirmed, move on to a full walk-around inspection.

Key areas to inspect:

  • Structure:
    Guardrails, platform, and chassis
Look for cracks, damage, or loose components
  • Tyres:
Check for wear, damage, and correct inflation
  • Hydraulics:
Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks or wear
  • Power Source:
Ensure sufficient fuel or battery condition

This is where attention to detail matters — small issues can quickly become serious risks.

2. Detect – Identify Issues Early

Inspection isn’t just about looking — it’s about finding problems before they become incidents.

As you inspect and operate the MEWP, actively look for:

  • Hydraulic leaks
  • Structural damage or fatigue
  • Warning indicators or alarms
  • Unusual noises or uneven movement

At the same time, assess your working environment:

  • Ground conditions and stability
  • Slopes or uneven terrain
  • Overhead obstructions

If something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t.

3. Correct – Take Action Immediately

If a defect is identified, action must be immediate.

The correct process:

  • Take the MEWP out of service immediately
  • Report the defect to the appropriate person
  • Ensure repairs are completed by a competent person

The machine must not be used until it has been properly repaired and deemed safe.

Function Testing – Before You Go to Height

Once your visual inspection is complete, the next step is to confirm the MEWP is functioning correctly.

Test:

  • Ground controls
  • Platform controls
  • Emergency systems (emergency stop, descent systems, alarms)

The MEWP must respond smoothly and correctly at all times.

Don’t Forget Your Surroundings

Even a perfect machine can become unsafe in the wrong environment.

Always assess:

  • Ground stability
  • Slopes
  • Obstacles and overhead hazards

Safe operation is not just about the machine — it’s about the full working environment.

Key Takeaway

If in doubt — do not operate the MEWP.

Inspect. Detect. Correct.

This simple process prevents incidents, protects operators, and ensures compliance on site.

  • Inspect before use
  • Detect issues early
  • Correct immediately

Final Thoughts

A proper pre-use inspection is not optional — it’s a critical safety step that must be carried out every time.

Rushing or skipping this process puts people, equipment, and projects at risk.

Take the time.
Do it properly.
And always prioritise safety.

Stay Safe. Stay Smart.
